S1.7 - Retirement Limit Calculations for Pressure Vessels in Operation

Pressure Vessels in service need to be monitored and evaluated to ensure that they are safe to remain in operation. Fitness for service calculations can be one part of this ongoing monitoring and evaluation for detected cracks, areas of corrosion and other flaws. In addition to this, however, for the owner-operator of the pressure vessel an important area of Fitness for Service is the calculation of a suitable and safe retirement limit for the pressure vessel. The owner-operator needs to know that the equipment is safe to remain in operation. There are various ways that this can be achieved. One common way is to evaluate the pressure vessel as it was originally, to obtain the maximum corroded thickness – which then leaves a simple subtraction to obtain the minimum permissible thickness. Once this is known, and the rate of corrosion is known from inspections, then an estimate can be made of when the vessel reaches this minimum thickness – and so will need to be retired. The ongoing monitoring and ongoing calculations can be performed with better confidence at suitable intervals. The issue with this method, however, is that it is quite time consuming to do. There are various considerations that the analyst must consider. Automating this process is the unique, innovative solution that will be discussed in this presentation. This automation reduces the time required to evaluate and calculate these retirement limits from days down to just a few seconds, drastically increasing the efficiency of in-service monitoring for Owner Operators.
