S3.4 - In-field Repair of Corrosion Resistant Weld Overlay on a Cr-Mo-V Reactor

Description

A high thickness, large diameter 2.25Cr-1Mo-0.25V Hydrocracker Reactor was repaired in field after a severe fire had damaged it. Repair includes restoring of Stainless Steel Weld Overlay on internal surface of reactor performed with a dedicated welding procedure that allowed avoiding repetition of PWHT even if residual thickness of existing weld overlay was as thin as 1.5mm. Furthermore, Stainless Steel Weld Overlay on a 6”-2500# Raised Face Nozzle Flange has been repaired by welding up to base metal and then locally heat treated. A special Stress Analysis was performed to demonstrate PWHT extension could be limited to the nozzle only. This experience has shown that a qualified supplier can manage in-field repair of V-Modified vessels also limiting the need for PWHT
