The CSA B51 boiler, pressure vessel, and pressure piping code is the fundamental legislation governing the pressure equipment industry in Canada. To help people outside of Canada better understand the Canadian rules and requirements in the pressure equipment discipline, this presentation will aim to describe the use of the CSA B51 code and how it should be applied when designing and constructing pressure equipment for use in Canada. To provide a broader context about the CSA B51 code and Canadian industry, this presentation will also describe how the CSA’s Technical Committee and Subcommittees work closely with key stakeholders, such as the industry, jurisdictions, public, and other organizations nationally and internationally, to develop this standard and implement new technologies and innovations. As part of this discussion, the relevant organization of the CSA B51 Technical Committee will be discussed. The final key goal of this presentation will be to emphasize how the CSA is harmonizing its B51 code with similar boiler and pressure vessel codes in other countries and to highlight the current initiatives in place to modernize the B51 code for 21st century users. This includes an overview on the CSA Technical committee’s interactions with the National Board of Boiler and Pressure Vessels Inspectors and with the ASME Boiler and Pressure Vessel Committees. Overall, this talk about the CSA B51 code will help people outside of Canada better understand the rules and regulations governing Canadian boiler and pressure vessel industry and highlight the current and future directions of the CSA Technical Committees.
